From what I understand, in 1983, a kid stood up while riding, hit his head on a low beam and died. I've also read that the kid got decapitated, but I've also read that he didn't. The ride closed and was eventually removed and replaced with Shockwave.

I remember galaxi. It was were shockwave is. It was a small S.D.C. steel roller coaster. There Was an accident on it in the 1984 I think. Some Kid stood up and got his head chopped off by a support. Funny how to deaths have occurred on that same spot, both by goofing around.

On August 23, 1999, a 20-year-old man failed to follow safety instructions on Shockwave. He deliberately, but for an unknown reason, freed his body from the restraints, and flew from the train's final turn at speeds of 40mph. He sustained fatal head injury upon contact with a steel catwalk.
Kinda freaky about the Galaxie incident - it happened on September 11! (1983). The boy was 13-year-old Daniel Watkins. The incident was used as the primary example of unsafe rides in local press coverage of the concurrent U.S. Senate hearings on amusement ride safety and regulation. Rather than reopen the attraction, Kings Dominion dismantled and sold it to Myrtle Beach Pavilion where it operated until 2006. (Source: Wikipedia)
Also, I was reading on another message board a while back (don't know which one) that the Galaxie didn't have any type of restraints so that was how the boy was able to stand up? Is that true?

^ at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion, i believe it was dismantled in the late 90's when Mad Mouse appeared, and before 2000, when Hurricane showed up!
AND i believe deaths happend while it was at the Pavilion.
not positive though.

True. I vividly remember riding the Galaxi, and if you weren't wedged in a seat with someone else, then you slid all over the place. And you only had the grab bar to hold onto. Though it was a fun ride.
I don't know if seat belts were ever installed in later years, but this picture of a car looks like I remember.

I don't think so. The KD Galaxie never had grass inside of ride. Looks like it's setup for a carnival. Though I believe that all of the cars & coasters were manufactured identical.
I'd love to have one of these in my back yard.
